Entre el Aparecer / Desaparecer

December 2022

Paulina Saavedra’s work plays with the visible and invisible aspects of things. In each project she uses different techniques and operations to delicately leave shapes and concepts visible.

In “We are fragile”, all her formal decisions aim to camouflage through monochrome and theme repetition, such as the singularity of people, their fragility or the relationship that could be established with nature –by leaving an empty space in the crowd or by painting two small trees in the middle– in order to let the concepts out lightly.

“Heterotopies of a blank page”. The images chosen for embossing have several things in common, the most obvious being that they all are or have been architectural structures that have been demolished, dismantled, burned and restored, functioning as living bodies or white ghosts resting on a sheet of paper.

“Problems of scale” summarizes with great clarity one of the biggest problems of our society: the non-presence of the female gender in countless places. To represent this finding, Paulina used small black and abstract shapes, which show on a smaller scale the silhouettes of the communes of Santiago. Next to each shape, another similar but even smaller figure allows us to measure the percentage of streets with women’s names in that space.
