Spell

June 2022

A spell is defined as a magical act that aims to produce effects in reality through certain procedures, which combine certain rituals, words, objects, etc., all loaded with a supernatural sense. In the case of this project for Departamento Jota, I wish to add another meaning to the term, which refers to “DIY”*, those handmade objects that, through certain materials, seek to replicate the function of others, even disguising their form, for example, those popularly known as “homemade weapons” or many other objects that, through ingenuity or the use of a “supplement” or added part, enhance the same effect of the original, even playing with its appearance and symbolism.

This ambiguity between both meanings of the concept, and the high performance – visual, in this case– of the materials and strategies of the artworks on display, are shown in two pieces that continue geometric explorations, luminous in terms of light projection, shadow and light refraction, and the recycling of waste materials that I collected around the city through a process that combines in its chance and archaeological search, a hint of Diogenes’ Disease and a situationist drift.

* = In Spanish, the word for “spell” and “DIY” is the same: Hechizo
